Biofilms: A Guide for QA, Compliance, and Bioprocessing Teams

A surface can look clean but still require effective sanitation to control microbial biofilms. A biofilm is a community of microorganisms that attaches to a surface and becomes embedded in a self-produced protective matrix. In food processing, biomanufacturing, and pharmaceutical environments, biofilms can develop on pipes, tanks, conveyors, drains, equipment surfaces, and other hard-to-clean areas. Why are biofilms a concern? They can harbor microorganisms that promote contamination that is very hard to remove. They can detach and disrupt your product or process, and routine cleaning may not remove them. This four-hour course will examine environmental conditions, cleaning and sanitization strategies, mechanical and chemical removal, anti-biofilm coatings/treatments, treating and removing established biofilms, biofilm awareness training, biofilm prevention, and several other strategies to consider.
